Nadine Altounji and Cécile Doo-Kingué: From the Andes to the Euphrates, via Montréal

  • Théâtre de la Vieille Forge Petite Vallée (map)

PRESENTATION

Performance presented as part of International Women’s Rights Day.

Two major artists from the Montréal scene meet at the crossroads of their roots. With From the Andes to the Euphrates, singer and multi-instrumentalist Nadine Altounji (oud, guitar) revisits her compositions influenced by the Levant, Latin America, and Montréal, in intimate and vibrant arrangements created as a duo with guitarist-composer Cécile Doo-Kingué.

During a creation residency in Gaspé, made possible through the support of the CCDG and Vision Diversité, they will shape new versions of Nadine Altounji’s repertoire—composed and performed by her—usually carried by an ensemble, to give it a renewed acoustic strength centered on the voice and the dialogue of strings. They will also create several new works, nourished by their sensibilities and plural heritages: Levantine maqâm, folk, blues, and Afro-diasporic echoes… a sonic journey where borders dissolve.

The performance will be followed by an onstage discussion.
