      <image:title>Marcha de Flores-2 - MARCHA DE FLORES</image:title>
<image:caption>Nadine Altounji met poet/dancer Marcia Castro Gamarra at a party in Cusco, Peru in 2018 and their connection was instant. The two women spent time together working on concepts for songs as they bonded over discussions about art, women’s rights, colonialism, dispossession, and privilege in addition to their individual personal experiences with dealing with the complexities of embodying and existing within intersecting cultures and identities. Marcia offered to write a poem for Nadine about the women’s rights protests that had been ongoing in the region. “I ran home and looked for inspiration,” recounts Marcia. “I watched the news and started to think, why are we protesting? What are we looking for? What happened to the women in the protests?” Marcia’s own lived experience of surviving an abusive relationship had transformed her understanding of feminism, herself and domestic violence. Being victimized by an intimate partner is isolating and humiliating, and far too often fatal, but for those who survive the healing begins when women stand together and demand change. From Warsaw to Cusco, women have taken to the streets demanding liberation from oppressive religious laws that seek to control our lives and our bodies. Inspired by how women across South America have been fighting the patriarchy for their right to live in peace, Marcia wrote Marcha de Flores. This poem examines the ground, watered by women’s blood, in which the flower of resistance bloomed. The video for Marcha de Flores was filmed, compiled and edited by Victorine Sentilhes. The video’s imagery includes photographs from the feminist activist group Genero Rebelde which document the Cusco protests, video footage Victorine had previously filmed in Chad and Haiti, as well as additional footage she shot in Montreal with a range of women to illustrate the universality of the issue of violence against women and to demonstrate solidarity with this important cause. We chose to release this video on Women’s Day in honour of our sisters, mothers and daughters and our collective struggle for equality and freedom. Violence against women, in all forms, must end.</image:caption>

<image:title>About-2 - Nadine Altounji is a Montreal-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s musical passion and skills are deeply rooted in the rich soil of her family’s Syrian homeland. In addition to being a talented vocalist, Nadine is a consummate musician, playing the piano, guitar, bass and oud. Her first solo EP I Still, which fuses Middle Eastern music with a folk and pop sensibility, was released in 2016 (under the name Nja). Her latest release, an album entitled The Stories that Tie Us to Trees, combines Middle Eastern and South American musical traditions, whereby Nadine reclaims her full name and her identity as a citizen of the world. A first generation Canadian, Nadine grew up hearing her Syrian grandmother play Middle Eastern classics on the piano, learning to play herself at the tender age of five. She later chose music as her profession. Nadine formalized her interest in music and its cultural significance by studying guitar at Concordia University and earning a BFA in Integrative Music Studies. A skilled musician, who has studied and taught music her entire life, Nadine has also put her talent to use working with other artists. As a songwriter and guitarist, she has collaborated with Montreal artist Wayne Tennant on several of his releases. She is also a member of the renowned Montreal musical collective Kalmunity, and the Imani Gospel Singers. Over the past five years, Nadine has turned her focus towards exploring and connecting with her Middle Eastern heritage, learning how to play the oud, a traditional Middle Eastern instrument that her great grandfather played. Her first solo release, I Still, was a personal musical and lyrical journey to self-acceptance and a wider realm of self-expression. Her second solo release explores similar themes from a more expansive perspective. After receiving a Research and Creation Grant from Canada Council for the Arts, Nadine spent four months in Ecuador and Peru researching and exploring local musical forms and traditions, as well as discussing issues of identity and culture, before returning home to Montreal to write and record her latest project, The Stories that Tie Us to Trees.</image:title>

      <image:title>Bint el Balad-2 - BINT EL BALAD</image:title>
<image:caption>Bint El Balad is a celebration of women of South West Asian and North-African descent born in the diaspora. It celebrates women who dance between worlds and are transformed. The song brings together Nadine Altounji,Nadia Bashalani and Dana El Masri, three women whose roots run deep into the rich soil of their parents’ Syria, Lebanon and Egypt homelands. Nadia and Dana are the lead vocalists on the song, and Nadine and Mark Alan Haynes wrote and arranged the music. Nadine also plays the oud on Bint El Balad, an instrument she’s spent the past three years learning, which her great-grandfather from Aleppo also played” Nadine suggested the concept and title Bint El Balad, which is also the song’s chorus, but it was Nadia and Dana who wrote the song’s lyrics. Inspired by the title of the 1955 Egyptian film Bint el balad (or Country Girl in English), the song references how the trope of the bint el balad in Egyptian film was itself changed when a regime change brought state control of cinema and, inextricably, control of the depiction of women. Nadine felt a desire to liberate the bint el balad from the authoritarian male gaze, to reimagine her through the loving gaze of women. This desire led her to ask, “who is a bint el balad in the modern age?” This song is both the question and the answer. Shot and edited by Victorine Sentilhes, the video for Bint El Balad features Nadine, Nadia and Dana. It portrays the evolution of the bint el balad from the past into a modern, liberated incarnation of the dancer, her clothing reflecting this transformation. Above all, it is a celebration of women, not as objects to be gazed upon but as people to be celebrated. In this intimate world, these women of the diaspora sing and dance themselves into the wholeness of their being.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Escarba en mi alma emerged from a songwriting collaboration that reaches across borders. Inspired by the Peruvian guitar and dance style, form the Tondero, this song features Nadine Altounji on guitar and vocals. The music was written in collaboration with Pedro Diaz, a Montreal-based, Peruvian singer-songwriter. Peruvian poet and dancer Marcia Castro Gamarra, who Nadine met and bonded with while doing research for the project in Cusco, Peru, wrote the words. The Spanish lyrics poetically explore the deep and intimate longing to reclaim cultural knowledge, kinship and the roots that had been unearthed and hidden by the ravages of conquest, colonialism and time. The video for Escarba en mi alma, which features Marcia Castro Gamarra’s dancing, was filmed by Peruvian filmmaker Johan Carrasco in Cusco, Peru (with additional footage of Nadine shot in Montreal by Victorine Sentilhes). The first flower of this fertile cross-pollination, the visuals capture a deep and resonant longing embodying the juxtaposition of joy and pain that is inherent to the human condition, exposing the fine filaments of emotion that connect our hearts across time, space and culture.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bint el Balad-2-fr - BINT EL BALAD</image:title>

The Stories that Tie Us to Trees.</image:title>

      <image:title>3ala bali-2 - 3ALA BALI</image:title>
<image:caption>3alabali (On My Mind) is a song about memories; nostalgia for homelands that have been transformed and, at times, rendered unrecognizable by the ravages of war. These traumatic images of destruction are often the only ones shown in the media. This song manifests a deep longing for that remembered place and time from which culture springs; it shows how memories can be carried in bodies and culture spread throughout the diaspora. Inspired by discussions about how they both longed to see loving, joyous representations of their rich cultural heritage, Dana El Masri wrote the Arabic lyrics for 3alabali (On My Mind), which she also sings. Nadine plays electric guitar while Ali El Farouk, is featured on the oud. Nadine composed 3alabali (On My Mind) that she then co-arranged with Mark Alan Haynes. Filmmaker, Victorine Sentilhes, created the stunning visual imagery for the video, a love song to the region that illustrates how culture, place and people, can live within us waiting to rise up. Sentilhes uses images of Aleppo and Damascus taken by photographer, director and musician Jason Hammacher of Lost Origin Productions. Hammacher first came to Nadine’s attention when she heard the ancient Christian chants he had recorded in Aleppo (a place where her father’s family has deep roots). Nadine’s varied family photos also give the video its depth and feeling. Other collaborators including Dana El Masri, Adel Bashalani, Sharif Mirshak, Christelle Franca, Anita Altounji, Michel Altounji and Mouna Maarawi offered personal photos from their families and travels. Sentilhes projects images from Syria, as well as from Egypt and Lebanon, onto the two women’s bodies where they flicker like dreams, with memories of the beloveds no longer with us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>3ala bali-fr-2 - 3ALA BALI</image:title>

      <image:title>No lo Olviden-2-fr - NO LO OLVIDEN</image:title>
The Stories that Tie Us to Trees.

      <image:title>No lo Olviden - 2 - NO LO OLVIDEN</image:title>
<image:caption>No lo olviden, the fifth and final song/video in Volume 1, is a song about children and the horrors of war. It’s a haunting cry from the diaspora calling out for justice and healing for families and cultures that have been torn asunder by war. Featuring Nadine Altounji singing in Spanish and performing spoken word in Arabic, No lo olviden is a song that flows between continents, languages and musical traditions, bringing together common threads of despair and resilience to suture the wounds of colonization and oppression. The first part of No lo olviden was influenced by the guitar and cajón (a Peruvian box drum) rhythms of the landó, an Afro-Peruvian musical genre that was created by formerly enslaved peoples and was largely ignored until the 1960s. Landó so captivated David Byrne of Talking Heads fame that he compiled Afro-Peruvian Classics : The Soul of Black Peru, the first internationally released compilation of landó music, in 1995. Like all other colonists and slavers, the Spaniards made a practice of ensuring enslaved people came from different tribes and regions of Africa. This tool of oppression intended to break tribal cohesion and destroy cultural links had the inverse effect, inspiring Afro-Peruvian people to create new musical forms that combined African, Andean and Spanish traditions. Nadine plays the oud and recites Arabic spoken word in the latter half of the song, continuing the cross-cultural pollination. The lyrics for No lo olviden’s were written by Peruvian poet Marcia Castro Gamarra following their conversations about children, war and the cultural threads that bind us together and to a place. Montreal-based Peruvian singer songwriter Pedro Diaz, co-wrote the music with Nadine and sings in Spanish alongside her while plays guitar. Multi-instrumentalist Mark Alan Haynes co-produced and co-arranged No lo olviden with Nadine. Shot and edited by Victorine Sentilhes, the video for No lo olviden presents war-ravaged Syria as well as a powerful and metaphorical image of the oud hanging from a tree. The metaphorical image is drawn from an origin story about the iconic instrument and is attributed to the early Islamic philosopher and scholar Abu Nasr Al-Farabi. The oud was created by Noah’s grandfather Lamech, who was inspired after hanging the body of his dead son from a tree. The legend suggests that the shape of the oud resembled the shape of his son’s skeleton. Many others have written about and praised the oud for its healing powers. “It places the temperament in equilibrium … it calms and revives hearts”. This story inspired the project and album title, The Stories That Tie Us to Trees. In the video, the oud imagery symbolizes the suffering of the Arabic people and is a call for healing through music. Music is not only a way for us to carry culture and to transmit tradition but also a path towards healing and a collective uplifting future for all.</image:caption>
